Geoeconomics Case Study - SEEDA

Client testimonial

"The Geoeconomics Economic Performance Review casts a new light on how economies in the Growth Area are performing and the linkages between them. We are already using it to implement multi area approaches toward inward investment in the Growth Area."

Deborah Wharton, Area Director, SEEDA

The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) commissioned Geoeconomics to develop a framework for monitoring and assessing economic performance at the local and sub-regional levels. Two pilot localities were chosen to develop the performance framework – Milton Keynes and Aylesbury Vale which form part of the wider Milton Keynes and South Midlands (MKSM) Growth Area. The framework has three distinct elements: a new Typology of Local Economies to classify and highlight the diversity of local economies which distinguishes between economic structures and outcomes; a suite of Geoeconomics Indices used to measure, compare and track the structural performance of local economies; and the use of recognisable Sustainable Development indicators to measure outcome performance. The results of applying the framework clearly showed that local economies are interdependent rather than being 'islands' of economic development. This analysis was used to highlight sub-regional approaches to economic development and the strategic relationships between Regional Development Agencies and local authorities.
