Lisa McCartney, Belfast City Council

The Review of Public Administration in Northern Ireland is leading Belfast and other local authorities to play a greater role in the region´s economic development. Against this background, Geoeconomics was invited by Belfast City Council to carry out a baseline assessment of its knowledge industries, identified as a key area in the Local Economic Development Plan and the Capital City Strategy, 2006-2010. Using other UK cities and city-regions as benchmarks, Geoeconomics analysed the scale, composition and growth performance of Belfast´s knowledge industries. Key findings enabled Belfast City Council to greatly develop their awareness and understanding of the sector, highlighting actions to raise the city´s competitive position in the knowledge-led economy.
